Men and Golf

Not much of a golfer, in fact I have only been 4 times. However, last weekend I went golfing and realized how much golf fits the stereotypes of what it means to be a man.

Self reliance
Everything is about "shooting"
"Hunting" for your ball
Beer consumption
Cussing when 'your clubs fail you'
Driving miniature cars over miniature mountains
Bragging rights go to the person not who can putt or chip but who can hit the ball the farthest
Being able to judge distances well
Moving in a pack

All it lacks is slapping one another on the butt and golf seems to fit every male stereotype I can consider.

I actually enjoy the game of golf too. The main problem I see with it is that it gives men and excuse to, after working all week, stay away from their families most of the day Saturday too.

Also, as long as I am able, I'll stick to sports that require a little more activity and save golf for when I'm old.

I am not sure if you can call golf a sport. If you can do it while drinking beer I am not sure it is a sport. Like hunting or bowling or poker.

Hobby? Sure.
Game? Definantly.
Sport? Not sure.

Seems you can do almost anything while drinking beer. Replace all water intake with beer intake and suddenly we have no sports, by your claim.

Maybe what separates the normal "Joe" from a high class athlete is that they don't drink beer while sporting. Then again, maybe it is the extreme training regiment, skill and generally high athletic ability that are the real kickers.
