You cannot say you do not like working with children in the church. I said that I do not really like working with children because I do not have the skill set for kids, and I was scolded.
"How can you not like children!"
"You cannot say that, you are a minister!"
"Where is your soul?!"
"Children are precious and I just do not know how you could say that!"
A few days later I was in a conversation with several people and the topic turned to how horrible youth are in the church.
"They make a mess."
"They are loud in church."
"They do not respect their elders."
"They feel entitled."
"They don't contribute to the life of the church."
So I guess I am curious to know how these descriptors are any different from children? I would submit they do not. The only difference is it is okay to say "I do not like to work with youth" and it is not okay to say "I do not like to work with children."
So if you are a child, you are wonderful.
If you are a youth, you are not.
If you are an adult, you must love children and leave working with youth to the "younger hired hands."
This makes my head hurt.

You are amazing with children! Thanks again for your help with VBS. You had their complete attention and they learned so much from you. I hear what you are saying and I have to say that I have been blessed by both the youth and children of our church! Thank you God for stretching us and taking us out of our comfort zones.

As far as the life of the church goes.. the children and youth are contribute more to that than any other group by far! Children are full of energy which keeps us young. They aren't afraid to question norms, which keeps us thinking and growing. We would be lost without them.
Some of the other comments may be true at times but whoever said that they don't contribute to the life of the church is an idiot! Hope they don't read your blog ;-)
I know my negative thoughts about youth result from negative thoughts when I was a youth. The teen years are difficult for everyone. I believe the people that don't like being around teens didn't like being a teen.
That is an intersteing idea, I never thought about it. I really liked being a teen, to my memory. But I also liked being a kid, but I do not really like working with kids. Maybe I am missing something...
